The JAEA-AMS-TONO facility at the Tono Geoscience Center, JAEA has an accelerator mass spectrometer (JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV). The spectrometer enabled us to use a multi-nuclide AMS of carbon-14 ($$^{14}$$C), beryllium-10, aluminium-26 and iodine-129, and we have recently been proceeding test measurement of chlorine-36. In response to an increase of samples, we installed a state-of-the-art multi-nuclide AMS with a 300 kV Tandetron accelerator in 2020. Recently, we are driving the development of techniques of isobar separation in AMS and of sample preparation. Ion channeling is applied to remove isobaric interference and we are building a prototype AMS based on this technique for downsizing of AMS. The small sample graphitization for $$^{14}$$C has been attempted using an automated graphitization equipment equipped with an elemental analyzer.

Vertical distribution of $$^{129}$$I released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in the Kuroshio and Oyashio current areas

To investigate the penetration of radionuclides released from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), depth profiles were revealed at Kuroshio current, transition, and Oyashio current areas. The FDNPP-derived $$^{129}$$I was found in surface layer at Oyashio current and transition areas and in sub-surface layer at Kuroshio current area. Moreover, it was found that the FDNPP-derived $$^{129}$$I/$$^{134}$$Cs ratios in the Oyashio current and transition areas were higher than that in the FDNPP reactor. The higher FDNPP-derived $$^{129}$$I/$$^{134}$$Cs ratios suggest three potential mechanisms for the migration of radionuclides in the environment: (1) radioiodine was released more easily than radiocesium by the FDNPP accident, (2) $$^{129}$$I was supplied from the atmosphere by re-emitted $$^{129}$$I from contaminated areas around Fukushima, (3) leaked water that removed radiocesium reached the sampling stations. The FDNPP-derived $$^{129}$$I in sub-surface layer would be transported by the meander of the Kuroshio Extension current.

Re-evaluation of neutron nuclear data for $$^{129}$$I and $$^{143}$$Nd

Nakagawa, Tsuneo; Hasegawa, Akira

JAERI-Research 2003-020, 46 Pages, 2003/09

JAERI-Research-2003-020.pdf:1.55MB

The evaluated nuclear data for $$^{129}$$I and $$^{143}$$Nd stored in JENDL-3.3 were investigated comparing with other evaluated data and experimental data. New experimental data were available especially for the capture cross sections of both nuclides. The parameters used in theoretical calculations were modified so as to reproduce those experimental data. The statistical model calculation was performed using the revised parameters. The resonance parameters were also revised so that the cross sections measured in the thermal energy region were reproduced well. The present results were compiled in the ENDF-6 format.

Development of analytical method of $$^{129}$$I and $$^{36}$$Cl for radioactive rubbles

Ota, Yuki; Kurosawa, Kiyoko*; Motoki, Yoshiaki*; Do, V. K.; Furuse, Takahiro

no journal, ,

We have developed an analytical method of $$^{129}$$I (half-life: 1.57x10$$^{7}$$ years) and $$^{36}$$Cl (half-life: 3.01x10$$^{5}$$ years) in various radioactive rubbles generated by decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F). A sequential chemical separation procedure has been developed to isolate the nuclides from the sample matrix, followed by the quantification by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) and liquid scintillation counting (LSC), respectively.
